Packing for a vacation with a baby is easier when you separate two jobs: the diaper backpack you need during the journey, and the suitcase you can unpack at your destination.
Pack your travel-day bag first
- Diapers and wipes for the journey, with a buffer for delays.
- A changing pad and spare outfits.
- Feeding supplies your baby normally uses.
- Bibs and burp cloths.
- A bag for used clothing.
- One familiar comfort item or small activity.
- Parent essentials, chargers and travel documents.
Keep the items you expect to use first near the top or in an accessible pocket. Put spare clothing and backup supplies deeper in the bag.
Use the suitcase for replenishment
Pack the additional clothing and supplies you will need at your destination, taking account of laundry and shopping options. A long vacation does not mean every diaper must fit in the day bag. Refill the backpack each evening with what you expect to use the next day.
Plan around the actual trip
A road trip, a flight and a day exploring a city have different packing needs. Check your transport provider's current baggage rules and your accommodation's available baby equipment before leaving. Do not assume that a backpack counts as a permitted personal item without checking its packed dimensions against the rules for your booking.
Organize by task
Separate changing supplies, feeding items and parent belongings into compartments or pouches. Keep liquids protected from clothing and electronics, and follow the relevant storage instructions for any food, milk or other supplies you carry.
Make space for a carrier
A carrier can be useful to have available during family outings. The Lublu HugBag combines a roomy diaper backpack with an included baby carrier that folds into a small rectangle and stores in the bag. It also includes a hip seat and changing pad. Review the instructions for the correct configuration and fit before use.
Check your bag the night before
- Replace used changing supplies.
- Restock spare clothes.
- Charge your devices.
- Set aside the feeding items that must be packed close to departure.
- Check documents, keys and your route.
